This sculpted sandstone effigy represents Rishabhanatha (or Adinatha), the first of the 24 tirthankara, also known as Jain "ford-makers". Jainism, an Indian religious doctrine, recognises 24 spiritual teachers whose mission is to transmit its fundamentals across the centuries.

Although deprived of any royal insignia or ornaments, this head is of King Jayavarman VII (r.1181-1218). It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of musée Guimet.

This face framed by twisted red hair express benevolence and agressivity all at the same time. The richness and refined treatment of the ornaments showcases the decorative qualities of Newar Art from the Kathmandu Valley in the 16^th century.

This masterpiece from southern India was used as an image during processions. The hole in its base allowed space for a processional stretcher so that the divine image could be carried by worhsippers or on a float.

This work is one of the mythical pieces of the collection of André Malraux who had himself photographed alongside it in the 1930s, already crowned with his fame as a writer.

This youth holding flowers in a flap of his clothing, with his slightly bent head and three-quarters bust, is one of the emblematic  Buddhist artworks of the site of Hadda in Afghanistan.
