The Villa Guimet, an international centre  for research on Asian arts

By 2030, the Hôtel d'Heidelbach, an annex of the Guimet Museum located at 19 Avenue d'Iéna in Paris, will undergo a major transformation to house the Villa Guimet, a world-class research centre dedicated to Asian arts. With the creation of this international centre, the Guimet Museum is confirming its commitment to promoting its collections and disseminating knowledge.

The Villa Guimet will have three main missions:

- To preserve and promote the collections and holdings of the Guimet Museum
- To develop international research on Asian arts by welcoming researchers and conducting innovative research and creative programmes for artists
- To promote and disseminate research findings through a programme of conferences, seminars and cultural activities.

des ressources du musée :

The Villa Guimet is coordinating the project to put the collections online and create a collections portal to make all of the museum's resources accessible:

- 65,000 works and their files
- 100,000 literary works
- 2,500 periodicals
- 600,000 photographs
- 1,000 linear metres of historical and scientific archives, 25 terabytes of digital archives, 4,000 sound and audiovisual archives.

The Villa Guimet will provide researchers and artists in residence with access to unique resources for developing knowledge about Asian arts: the library, photographic collections, historical archives and scientific documentation related to the museum's collections.

The study, preservation, indexing and digitisation of these collections will enable four main areas of research to be pursued:

- The materiality of the works: materials, techniques and typologies

- The history of Asian arts: contexts, creation, iconography and styles

- The history of the collections and the circulation of Asian works

- The perception of Asia in museology and Asian art exhibitions.

Finally, the Villa Guimet aims to host several French and foreign researchers and artists from a variety of disciplines. An annual call for applications will allow these researchers and artists from all backgrounds to submit their research and creative projects, drawing on the wealth of collections made available to them.

Their work will broaden the understanding, knowledge and interpretation of the Asian artworks held by the museum through a dual approach combining sensitivity and science, developing a broader reflection on the place and impact of Asian arts in the contemporary globalised context.

The renovation of the Hôtel Heidelbach and the 2030 ambition

One of the major projects at the Villa Guimet is the architectural renovation of the Hôtel d’Heidelbach, located at 19 Avenue d'Iéna, a few steps from the museum. In 2030, the renovated setting of this elegant mansion, built in 1913 by architect René Sergent, will provide an exceptional venue for welcoming the museum's scientific teams, researchers, artists and the general public with a passion for Asian arts. The project includes consultation and co-working rooms, offices for residents, a conference room, storage rooms, a treatment and conservation room, as well as rest and dining areas, with access to a garden featuring a Japanese tea pavilion. This authentic pavilion was designed in 2001 by one of Japan's greatest master carpenters, Yamamoto Takaaki.
