EXHIBITIONS
Samurai, monks and ninjas. Manga revisits Japan’s history.
1st July – 9th August 2010

The Guimet museum wishes to present, to the fans and the simply curious, the little known aspects of the Manga diversity and richness based on the theme of Japan’s history… The first section of the exhibition, on the third floor of the museum, will deal with Japanese history as seen by the Manga, from the 1950s to the modern day. As a counterpoint, the second section, in the 2nd floor rotunda, will present a few historical or legendary figures to the visitor, as portrayed in ancient graphic creations.
Extras linked to the exhibition: “Manga corner”: exceptional opening of a temporary Manga reading room in the museum’s 4th floor rotunda.

Rashid Rana - Perpetual Paradox
7th July – 15th November 2010
The Guimet museum is diving headfirst into contemporary art!

For the first time in France, the Guimet Museum is exhibiting the contemporary work of Rashid Rana, considered Pakistan’s greatest contemporary artist for his digital photo-montages, sculptures or video installations.
Twenty puzzling and paradoxical works will be scattered throughout the museum’s permanent collection, providing an exceptional opportunity to confront contemporary art with the Guimet museum’s ancient Asian works of art, thereby challenging tradition and its “illusion of permanence”, ancient times and contemporary times.

Extra-mural EXHIBITION
The Silk & the Cannon FRANCE-CHINA (1700/1860)
In the Château des Ducs de Bretagne - Nantes
26th June – 7th November 2010
In October 1700, the Amphitrite, France’s first merchant ship to trade with China, returned to France and sold its cargo in Nantes, a major colonial commercial port: tea, silk, porcelain, mother-of-pearl, ivory, enamelled panels etc. This marked the beginning of a genuine taste for China, Chinese objects and culture. The Opium wars of the 19th century, culminating in the looting of Beijing’s summer palace in 1860, confirmed the radical shift in the economic balance and the decline of the Middle Kingdom. The Silk & the Cannon exhibition explores the evolving perception of this faraway and fascinating Far East, based on the presentation of prestigious objects on loan from major museums, including the Guimet museum of Asian arts, a partner of the project. It provides insight into our relationship with contemporary China.
